PBS Vienna New Year Concert 2022

Great Performances continues its tradition of ringing in the New Year with the Vienna Philharmonic at the world-famous Musikverein. Under the baton of Grammy-winning guest conductor Daniel Barenboim, the Vienna Philharmonic performs a selection of favorite Strauss family waltzes. The concert also features dances from the Vienna State Ballet performing on location at Schönbrunn Palace and its park grounds, as well as a performance by the world-famous Lipizzaner horses from The Spanish Riding School. This is conductor Daniel Barenboim’s third year conducting the New Year’s Concert, following concerts in 2009 and 2014.
This is Hugh Bonneville’s fifth consecutive year acting as host for the New Year’s Concert.
Hosted by Earl of Grantham “Downton Abbey” actor Hugh Bonneville, Great Performances: From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2022 follows the “Downton Abbey” film airing Saturday, December 25 on PBS.
The Vienna Philharmonic performs approximately 40 concerts in Vienna a year, among them the New Year’s Concert and the Summer Night Concert.
This year marks the 125th anniversary of the giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater Park, a favorite site on Vienna’s skyline.
